Newfoundland

An Ottawa Photographer Goes East

In August 2025, I made my first real visit to Newfoundland, or, as the locals call it, the Rock.

I had visited its capital, St. John’s, on a business trip all the way back in 2023, but that lasted only 36 hours or so. The highlight of that trip was going up to Signal Hill and seeing an iceberg drifting off the coast.

Now, some 22 years later, I returned. And you know, dear reader, that my camera was coming along. I fully intended on filling my memory cards with photos and videos.

With dramatic coastlines, sweeping barrens, thick boreal forests, and ancient rock formations, Newfoundland did not disappoint. The weather was fabulous, and the smoke from the few wildfires raging in the province was never an issue. We saw fantastic sunrises – including one at Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America- stunning sunsets, wild horses walking along the coast, colourful houses, quaint fishing villages, and even a humpback whale.

A beautiful trip, which I am delighted to share with you here.
